Oak Ridge Training
For more than five years, EnergX provided training for all workers at the Transuranic Waste Processing Center (TWPC) project in Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge training facility was instituted in response to training needs for workers hired under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). Many newly-hired workers had never worked in the hazardous and radioactive waste environment. With safety as their goal, TWPC management determined that it was prudent to fully train each new employee offsite to the TWPC safety culture and the rigors of a Hazard Category 2 Nuclear Facility prior to working at the site. At DOE’s TWPC in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, EnergX implements the requirements set forth in DOE Order 5480.20A, to ensure that:
- Qualification programs are developed and implemented in an effective and reliable manner consistent with the hazard involved and the risk associated with the task and/or project.
- Qualification programs promote an awareness of the risks involved and a level of proficiency consistent with assigned tasks.
- All persons are qualified to perform their jobs with a level of competence commensurate with their responsibilities.
EnergX trained all waste handlers, RCTs, health and safety personnel, as well as supervisory and management personnel at TWPC. EnergX utilizes mock-ups to train new employees on the use of manipulators for work in hot cells as well as glove box work. We implemented all phases of the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) process. The steps include analysis of training needs, design, development, review, approval, evaluation, and feedback. More specifically, we utilize the following guidance:
- HNF-PRO-170, Analyzing Training
- HNF-PRO-171, Designing Training
- HNF-PRO-172, Developing Training
- DOE-STD-1011-92, DOE Guideline to Good Practice for the Design, Development, and Implementation of Examinations.
- HNF-PRO-173, Implementing Training
