Nuclear Facility M&O
EnergX managed the Transuranic Waste Processing Center (TWPC) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The TWPC is a Hazard Category 2 nuclear facility, operating under a DOE-approved safety basis. The TWPC incorporates 10 safety significant structures, systems and components. The facility is designed and permitted for the handling of solid radioactive waste, including low-level waste (LLW); mixed low-level waste (MLLW); and transuranic (TRU) wastes. In addition, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulated constituents are processed individually and in radioactive waste streams. EnergX is also responsible for management and disposal of industrial and sanitary wastes generated at the TWPC.
EnergX operates the TWPC in full compliance with more than 70 DOE Orders, CFRs, and DOE EM program oversight. EnergX executed facilities operations and maintenance (O&M), ISMS, design-build, Environmental Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q), project support, Engineering, Central Characterization Project (CCP) support, and interfaces. Regulatory program elements include environmental permitting, environmental program support, commitments tracking, assessments, and training.
To assure compliance with contract requirements and regulations, to measure performance, and drive continual improvement, EnergX manages performance assurance. Elements of performance assurance include requirements management, performance assessment and metrics, continuous improvement, risk management and project management support, facility startup/restart readiness planning, and integrating client interface and support. EnergX received many accolades including:
- Achieved the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star status
- Achieved 564 accident/injury-free days and 1,000,000 accident/injury-free hours
- Received ORO’s “Outstanding Safety Award”
- No lost time accidents in the last 5 years
- Never received a notice of violation (NOV)
- Never received a Price-Anderson Amendments Act (PAAA) enforcement action
- Awarded the National Safety Council “Occupational Excellence Achievement Award” for 2008
- Awarded the National Safety Council “Perfect Record Award” for every year EnergX managed the TWPC
- Received full ISO14001 certification with no findings
- EnergX is the only operator of a DOE waste treatment and storage facility that has achieved full ISO 14001 certification
